Urban agriculture is gaining recognition in Indonesia as a multidimensional approach to address complex urban challenges while delivering social, economic, and environmental benefits. Led by Aji Saputra, with Oekan S. Abdoellah & Gemilang Lara Utama, this study explores the current development of urban agriculture initiatives in major Indonesian cities, examining both the progress achieved and the mechanisms designed to support sustainability goals. It has been published in Local Environment (Publisher: Routledge) and is indexed in Q2.
Despite its potential, urban agriculture in Indonesia continues to face persistent obstacles, including limited land availability, inadequate infrastructure, financial barriers, and complex regulatory frameworks. Nevertheless, urban agriculture demonstrates clear benefits—improving access to fresh and nutritious food, strengthening community engagement, creating livelihood opportunities, and contributing to healthier and greener urban environments. These impacts directly support society by enhancing food security, reducing inequality, and improving overall quality of life in urban areas.
Drawing from international practices in Singapore, New York, and Ghana, the study emphasizes the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and community involvement in building sustainable urban farming systems. These insights offer valuable lessons for Indonesia to adopt more inclusive, resilient, and integrated approaches, ensuring that urban agriculture becomes an essential part of city planning and resilience strategies.
By learning from global best practices, Indonesia can transform urban agriculture into a driver of sustainable development, creating healthier, more inclusive, and resilient cities for the future. This aligns strongly with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by ensuring access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food in urban areas.
