Identity, Development, and Resilience Democracy

This course studies the relations between identity, development, and democratic resilience. The aim is to understand how social and economic changes at the local (village) level can influence the identity construction and capacity of village communities to respond to these changes as part of efforts to strengthen local democracy. Development practices often trigger resistance when they ignore the participation of local communities or marginalize their access to resources in their villages. Due to this, it is necessary to examine the current development practices and their implications for the identity construction of the local community. After understanding these implications, the discussion continued on the capacity building of local communities to participate more actively in village resource management as a prerequisite for more democratic village governance.

In fact, the electoral system affects the exercise of government in Indonesia, both central and local governments.

The economic and military competition has been escalating dramatically in the region and therefore, Indonesia as one of the traditional ASEAN members needs to avoid the potential conflict diplomatically. The course will examine and evaluate Indonesia’s foreign policy approach towards international conflict which by far has been considered successful. The objective of this course is to explore and to understand the reason behind Indonesia and ASEAN different approaches in comparison with the EU or NATO in maintaining regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
