Led by Kinanti Indah Safitri, a research team from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) has explored how commercialization shapes environmental ethics in urban agriculture, focusing on farming communities in Greater Bandung. This research has been published on Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics journal (Q1 Journal).

Based on qualitative research with 43 participants, the study uncovers a stark contrast: export-oriented farmers often adopt sustainable practices—such as agroforestry, organic fertilizer production, and integrated farming systems—driven by strict environmental regulations, while local market suppliers face pressures that lead to intensive synthetic input use (including dependency on middlemen through credit schemes called ijon), use of contaminated irrigation water, and poor slope management.

The authors call for stronger legislative frameworks, integration of local wisdom, and community-based initiatives to ensure that urban agriculture supports both economic viability and environmental stewardship.
