A research led by Rina Hermawati, Nandang Alamsah Deliarnoor, and Agus Taryana from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Padjadjaran highlights how women in Bandung are driving food security through urban farming initiatives like “Buruan SAE”. As Bandung faces food deficits, these community programs have become vital for ensuring household food availability, with women playing two central roles: (1) initiating farming communities and (2) leading cultivation efforts.
Using qualitative case studies of six “Buruan SAE” groups, researchers found that while traditional gender roles persist with women often handling “feminine” tasks and men “masculine” ones, these divisions remain flexible. However, women face a double burden, balancing productive (farming) and reproductive (domestic) work, while men enjoy greater mobility.
