Commitment to environmental sustainability is not only realized through formal faculty programs but also through personal initiatives by lecturers. One example is Zaenal Muttaqin, a lecturer in Business Administration at FISIP Unpad, who became one of the initiators of the Jatinangor Urban Farming community in Desa Sayang, Jatinangor. This community utilizes unused land by developing hydroponic farming, with its harvests distributed to local vegetable stalls (B2B) as well as directly to consumers (B2C). Since September 2024, the area has also been expanded into a culinary business based on hydroponic produce, providing added value for the surrounding community.
This initiative aligns with SDG 15: Life on Land, as it demonstrates sustainable land management practices amid the growing challenge of farmland conversion. By turning idle land into productive space, urban farming not only preserves terrestrial ecosystems but also creates new social and economic opportunities for the people of Jatinangor.
In addition, Zaenal Muttaqin, together with Deasy Silvya Sari (International Relations lecturer) and Ratih Purbasari (Business Administration lecturer), wrote an academic article titled “Pemanfaatan Lahan Kosong: Mengupayakan Ketahanan Pangan Global dalam Keseharian Masyarakat Lokal”. This collaboration emphasizes that academics can play an active role in promoting concrete solutions that integrate environmental, food security, and community aspects.
